The process and lesson learnt

I marked up my PD time schedule on achieving my PD goal on the first week. At the 5th and 9th week, there will be a soccer match to check whether have I achieve my goal.

Due to the weather, we only managed to play soccer on the 9th week instead. So during the 5th week, I stayed home, and research on soccer dribbling skills on Youtube. The problem I faced was, they were professionals, while I am just a greenhorn in soccer. So in order for me to achieve to their standards, I would have to take up professional trainings.

At the start of the PD goal journey, I was quite looking forward to achieve the soccer dribbling and shooting skills. But as days passes, with heavy school workload and other external commitments I had, I didn't manage to follow the time schedule I drafted on week 1.

The lost of motivation and school work stress makes me want to leave the goal aside. However, during the term break, I managed to meet up with my friends and we had a short soccer game.

From the previous post, I managed to dribble past Ivan and score a goal. Though it was a tough learning journey as it requires hard work and effort, and of course talent in sports, I had a lot of fun playing soccer with my friends.

I know I can do better in my skills and shooting, but due to time constraint, I managed to pick up the basic skills. If, with the help of a professional, I believe I can achieve even more skills and techniques.

The soccer match

I've been well and train up my fitness again. Still I faced weather problem, which is the rain.

Finally, we managed to meet up on a friday, and the sun was pretty good. But there was a little rain just before we came. The field is not so perfect, with muds and little puddles of water.

I managed to master the dribbling technique that I have learned, from one of the top footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo. It was his famous stepover move, and I managed to learn it from videos I've watched from the internet.

I even dribbled the ball while running and ran past my friend, Ivan. Finally, I learn the basic shooting skill, and shoot the ball to score the goal. My another friend, Eugene, was the goalkeeper. He didn't manage to save the ball that I have shot.

This is one of the basic skills I have learnt through this short period. I cannot compare myself with those footballers out there. They are paid to train almost everyday and play soccer matches. How I envy them, earning big money and getting to play their favourite sport.

The road to accomplish my goal

I have drawn up a timetable for my goal few weeks back. It was part of my Personal Development goal which I have to achieve.

For the next few weeks, I have to work on my soccer skills, which is dribbling. I looked at soccer videos from Youtube to learn the tricks before trying out at home or under the void deck. The goal was to dribble with the ball, run past the defender and score a goal.

As December is the monsoon month, I expected rain and muddy fields throughout the month. Lucky for me, there was a few days which didn't rain at all. So I had my first match with my friends.

We didn't take any pictures but I managed to gain some experience on the field. In my next match, I will provide pictures to show that I have achieved my goal.

Another problem I faced during this period was I fell ill just before the term break. Doctor told me to avoid sports activity for a week or so, until I have fully recover. So till the next post, I have restrain from sports activity.

A Biography

Soccer is not just my passion, but I also loved the sleek skills on the field with the football. Players with dribbling ability, or shooting ability, just caught my attention.

I want to talk about my favourite player, Lionel Messi. He is truly one of the world football's global superstars. Having made his Argentina debut against Hungary in August 2005, Messi has gone on to make 43 appearances and score 12 goals for his country.

Lionel Messi began his career at FC Barcelona in 2000/2001 season, but failed to make a league appearance during his first 2 years at the club. He made 22 league appearances and scoring 6 goals for Barcelona 'B' Team in 2003/2004. He then join back the first team of Barcelona in 2004/2005 and has since made an impact to the club.

At just 22 years of age, he has a great record of 12 competition wins to his name. He also earned recognition from the footballing community for his achievements such as World Player of the Year runner-up for 2 occasions, European Footballer of the Year runner-up.

At the recent Ballon d'Or award, one of the biggest award in football world, Messi has take home the winner of the award. Having won most of the awards this year, he is truly one of the greatest footballer in the current generation. His next target was to win the World Cup for his country.

In the recent article in the Newspaper, he mentioned that with determination and hard work, effort will be paid off. His humble personality helped him in gaining wisdom and respect. Even his lifestyle, as compare with other footballers, he prefers to stay home with his family where other footballers would prefer late night partying and boozing.

Soccer

The history of soccer goes way back into the mid 19th century. It has different various way of playing soccer at that point of time. Till the Football Association took charge in 1863.

The rules of the game, including offside & tackling rules, have changed over the years. The FIFA took charge in 1904 and have since then, been in charge of all disciplinary and game conducts.

My Personal Development Goal was to dribble and score in a 2-a-side match against my friends. Scoring is the most basic rule in soccer. You score by kicking the ball into the opponent's net.

Dribbling is one of the most difficult ball skills to master and one of the most useful attacking moves. In typical game play, players attempt to propel the ball toward their opponents' goal through individual control of the ball, such as by dribbling (running with the ball close to their feet). For e.g, in the below picture, shows a footballer dribbling with the ball.

Dribbling creates space in tight situations where the dribbler is marked (closely guarded by a defender), and the dribbler can either score or create scoring chances after a successful dribble.

However, dribbling, if poorly mastered and used, may result in the loss of possession either when the ball is intercepted or tackled by a defender.

The purpose of learning such skills, can provide favours to own team, be it in passing or scoring. For my goal, it would be like my idol, Lionel Messi, currently playing for club Barcelona in Spain, to dribble and score a goal.

Here's 2 videos on his dribbling skills.

My first introduction

Hi people. My name is Benson Kheng. I'm a student from NYP. I'm doing this blog is for my Personal Development Module.

Firstly this blog is created because of the SMART goal that I have chosen to accomplish within 9 weeks. My goal is to dribble and score a goal in a 2-a-side soccer match.

Why I choose soccer is because I love soccer ever since young. Though I didn't have much chances to play with other people, I only get to watch it. The likes of Roberto Baggio, Frank & Ronald De Boer, Beckham, Cantona, etc, were just the soccer players that somehow inspired me. Or I should say love this sports because of them.

My plan to achieve my smart goal is to learning dribbling skills & shooting techniques. I know there are videos that teaches us how to dribble. I not gonna post it here now. I will do it in the next post.

Just to end it off, I will find some interesting videos on soccer & post it here whenever I have the time to blog it.
